Getting a tattoo on holiday in Batumi: sea, sun and healing
By LUX INK Tattoo StudioPublished

Batumi is one of those places people fall in love with: the sea, the boulevard, the mountains on the horizon. It is no surprise that many visitors want to take a piece of the trip home with them, on their skin. A tattoo on holiday is a great idea, as long as you plan it around one simple fact: a fresh tattoo cannot go into the sea.
Here is how to plan a tattoo in Batumi so it heals beautifully and does not cost you your beach days.
Why sea, sun and a fresh tattoo don't mix
A new tattoo is an open wound for the first two to three weeks. During that time:
- Sea water contains bacteria and salt that irritate healing skin and can lead to infection.
- Swimming pools are chlorinated and are just as risky.
- Sun burns sensitive skin and damages pigment while it is settling.
- Heat and sweat increase swelling and friction under clothes.
Batumi has a humid subtropical climate: summers are hot and humid, and the swimming season usually runs from June to early October. That is exactly when most travellers arrive, and exactly when healing needs the most attention.
When to book your session
Best option: at the end of your trip. Spend your first days on the beach, then get tattooed one or two days before you leave. The tattoo heals at home, away from the sea, and you don't sacrifice a single swim.
Staying for a month or longer? Book the session in the first days, heal it while you explore the city, the botanical garden and the mountains of Adjara, and enjoy the sea in the second half of your stay.
Visiting off-season? Autumn, winter and spring are the most comfortable time for a tattoo in Batumi: no beach temptations, mild temperatures and less sweating. Many locals plan bigger pieces for this period.
Make contact early. Write to the studio before your trip with your idea, size and placement. This gives the artist time to prepare an individual design and to find a date that suits your plans; here is how booking works.
How to heal a tattoo in the summer heat
- Keep the tattoo covered from direct sun with loose, breathable clothing.
- Wash it gently two or three times a day and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream; in humid weather, less is more.
- Avoid long walks in the midday heat in the first days, as heavy sweating slows healing.
- Do not use sunscreen on a fresh tattoo: it is for healed skin only.
- Take short showers instead of baths.
For the full healing routine, read our tattoo aftercare guide.
When can I swim after a tattoo?
Only when the surface of the skin has completely closed: no flaking, no scabs, no shiny areas. For most tattoos that is at least 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer for large or densely shaded pieces. When in doubt, wait a few more days and ask your artist.
After healing, protect the tattoo with a high-SPF sunscreen every time you go to the beach. Sun is the main reason tattoos fade over the years.
Choosing the size and placement for a trip
- Short trip, beach plans: a small or medium piece in a place you can easily keep covered, scheduled at the end of the holiday.
- Large pieces and sleeves usually require several sessions. Plan them for the off-season, or start with the first session and continue on your next visit.
- Feet, ankles and hands are hard to protect on a beach holiday: sand, sandals and constant movement make healing difficult. They are also among the more sensitive placements.

Flying home with a fresh tattoo
Flying with a new tattoo is fine. Wear loose clothing over it, keep the area clean, take your aftercare cream in your hand luggage (in a travel-size container) and wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
A tattoo as a memory of Batumi
The best holiday tattoos are not random flash pieces chosen in a hurry. They are designs created for you, around a place, a feeling or a story from the trip. At LUX INK every design is individual: tell us what Batumi means to you, and the artist will turn it into a piece you will want to wear for life. Browse our recent work for ideas.
