Does getting a tattoo hurt? A pain guide by body placement
By LUX INK Tattoo StudioPublished

It is the question every first-timer asks: will it hurt? The honest answer: yes, a little, but usually much less than people expect. Most clients describe the feeling as a hot scratch or a persistent vibration. Many are surprised that after the first ten minutes the body adapts and the feeling becomes background noise.
How much it hurts depends mostly on where you get tattooed. Here is a simple guide.
What affects tattoo pain
- Placement. Thin skin, bone close to the surface and many nerve endings make an area more sensitive.
- Session length. The skin becomes more sensitive after several hours of work.
- Technique. Lines feel sharper; shading and solid black feel more like a dull burn.
- Your condition. Sleep, food, stress and alcohol all change how you feel pain.
- Your mindset. People who are relaxed and breathe calmly feel less pain, and a calm studio atmosphere helps with that.
Least painful placements
These areas have thicker skin, more muscle or fat and fewer nerve endings:
- outer upper arm and shoulder;
- outer forearm;
- outer thigh;
- calf;
- upper back.
They are great choices for a first tattoo and good places for larger work like black and grey realism.
Moderately painful placements
- inner forearm: thinner skin, but very manageable;
- chest and shoulder blades;
- upper and lower back near the spine;
- inner thigh.
Most painful placements
These areas have thin skin directly over bone or a high concentration of nerves:
- ribs and sternum;
- spine;
- feet, ankles and the top of the foot;
- hands and fingers;
- knees and the back of the knee, elbows and the inner elbow;
- armpits and inner upper arm;
- head, face and neck;
- hip bones.
These placements are absolutely possible: many beautiful tattoos live on the ribs or the spine. Just expect a more intense session, plan for breaks and prepare well.
How to make the session easier
- Sleep and eat well before the session: a tired, hungry body feels pain more.
- Skip alcohol for at least 24 hours before.
- Breathe slowly and don't hold your breath.
- Take breaks when you need them; just tell the artist.
- Distract yourself with music, a podcast or a conversation.
- Start small if it is your first tattoo and you are nervous.
- Ask about numbing creams before the session, not on the day: not every product suits every skin, and your artist should agree to it.
The full checklist is in our guide on how to prepare for a tattoo.
Does the healing hurt?
The first two or three days the tattoo feels like a mild sunburn: warm, tender and sensitive to touch. After that it mostly itches while it flakes. Follow the aftercare guide and do not scratch.
The bottom line
A tattoo is uncomfortable, but not unbearable, and the discomfort lasts a few hours while the tattoo stays for life. An experienced artist with a confident, gentle hand makes a real difference, which is why experience is the first thing to check when you choose a tattoo studio.
